Places to visit
Sri Aurobindo Ashram
The ashram offers a serene and spiritual atmosphere where visitors can experience peace, reflection, and inspiration. Open daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, the ashram welcomes seekers and visitors alike. Please note that there is a midday break around 1:00 PM, during which the ashram is closed to the public. Inside the ashram, you’ll find the carefully preserved belongings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, displayed with respect and devotion. Each item reflects their legacy and teachings, offering a unique glimpse into their lives and spiritual journey.
Auroville
It is an international township near Puducherry, founded in 1968 with the vision of The Mother. It is more than just a place - it's a living experiment in human unity. Auroville invites people from all over the world to live in harmony, beyond nationality, religion, or politics. There are people all around the world here who lives harmoniously among each other and also with nature.
Visitors can explore Auroville daily, with the Visitor's Centre open from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The Matrimandir, a golden spherical meditation center located at the heart of Auroville is the main highlight where only selected individuals are allowed on a first come first serve basis to meditate and experience the higher being. The township also features eco-friendly architecture, organic cafes, handmade boutiques, and cultural spaces where art, sustainability, and community thrive together. Whether you're a spiritual seeker, an eco-traveler, or a curious visitor, Auroville offers a unique space to reflect, grow, and re-connect.
Manakula Vinayagar Temple
It is one of the city's oldest temples, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. With its vibrant architecture, rich history, and spiritual significance, the temple attracts thousands of devotees and tourists all around the year. The temple is open to visitors daily, generally from 5:45 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The highlight is the grand idol of Lord Vinayagar (Ganesha), adorned with gold and silver, and believed to be very powerful
French War Memorial
It is located on the scenic Promenade Beach and stands as a tribute to the brave soldiers of French India who lost their lives during World War I. Built in 1938, the memorial is not only a historical landmark but also a place of quiet reflection and remembrance. Every year on July 14th known as Bastille Day, the memorial is beautifully illuminated and serves as the site of official ceremonies attended by French and Indian dignitaries, veterans, and the public.
Other places to not miss
Promenade Beach (Rock Beach): A 1.5-kilometer stretch of rocky shoreline within a close proximity to White Town and Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The beach is a no-vehicle zone in the evenings, where one can sit along the rocks and get lost in the soothing sound of waves hitting the shores.
Paradise Beach: A secluded beach with pristine golden sand, accessible by a short boat ride from the Chunnambar Boat House. It's a great spot for sunbathing.
Serenity Beach: As the name suggests, this is a serene place where the land has merged with the sea. The best time to visit the beach is at the sunrise or sunset. It is widely popular as it provides surfing opportunities and also one can book surfing lessons from a variety of training institutes located there.
Chunnambar Boat House: Located along the backwaters, this is a hub for boating and water sports. It serves as the gateway to Paradise Beach.
Places to eat
The city has a lot to offer when it comes to food. With its French colonial charm blended with South Indian roots, the food boasts a rich and flavorful culinary landscape. From street food stalls to elegant cafés, there are a lot of top places to eat in Pondicherry worth mentions are : Surguru, The Promenade – Bay of Buddha, Coromandel Café which offers restaurant and cafe style arrangement. Apart from these, one must visit the Police Canteen where they offer tasty food at subsidized rates.
Must Try is the Shri Kamatchi Biriyani - They serve delicious biriyani and the taste is very good. One should definitely try it when in Puducherry.
