Night Stay

Nestled in the northern region of Odisha, Similipal offers a truly unique experience, blending adventure, excitement, and peace in one mesmerizing setting. Once an under-the-radar gem, Similipal has always been close to my heart, not just for its beauty but because it lies only 60 km from my hometown in Odisha. Growing up, I heard countless stories about its lush forests and vibrant wildlife, and I have fond memories of visiting Similipal on school picnics, where I could experience its magic firsthand.

Similipal, officially known as Similipal Tiger Reserve, is situated in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district and spans an impressive 2,750 square kilometers. This diverse ecosystem is home to more than 1,076 plant species, 42 species of mammals, 242 species of birds, and 30 species of reptiles, according to government records. While it is renowned as a tiger reserve, housing Odisha’s largest tiger population of 27 as of the 2024 census, Similipal offers much more. Its name comes from the Simul or red silk cotton tree, which grows abundantly throughout the area, adding a touch of vibrant red to the forest landscape.

In the past, options for staying within Similipal were limited. A few government inspection bungalows and Pantha Nivas guesthouses were available, though mostly reserved for government employees. However, in 2016, Odisha Tourism launched an ecotourism initiative under the “Community Managed Nature Tourism” model. This program involves local villagers as stakeholders, creating a sustainable tourism model that not only promotes Odisha’s natural beauty but also provides economic benefits to the local communities. Through this initiative, visitors can now book accommodations and experiences through a dedicated website, making Similipal’s wonders accessible to both national and international travelers. (I'll share the website details shortly.)

Similipal Nature Camp offers four unique accommodation options for nature enthusiasts: Barehipani, Jamuani, Kumari, Gurguria, and Ramtirtha. Kumari and Gurguria are located closer to the park’s core, providing a deeper wilderness experience, while Barehipani is situated near the stunning Barehipani waterfall. Ramtirtha is conveniently located near the Jashipur entry gate, making it an ideal choice for those entering from that side of the park.

Entry

Similipal National Park has two entry and exit points: Pithabata, located near Baripada town, and Jashipur on the opposite side. Due to the park’s expansive area, these gates are approximately 170 km apart. The Jashipur entry is the most popular and is the one I personally recommend. If you plan to drive your own vehicle, be aware that a ground clearance of at least 180 mm is necessary due to the park’s rugged terrain, designed to preserve its natural beauty. Vehicles need to be registered at the Jashipur check gate, where entry fees are charged per person.

Kumari

Nestled closest to the park’s core and surrounded by serene mountains, this location offers a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. It features 14 cottages, each accommodating two adults, with extra mattresses available for minors at an additional cost. Details on these charges can be found on the official website. The room tariff includes complimentary meals for the day, allowing guests to fully relax and enjoy their stay amidst nature.

Gurguria

Gurguria Nature Camp, nestled near a scenic pine forest, is home to one of India’s most beautiful orchidariums, showcasing 63 indigenous orchid species that bloom spectacularly in summer. The camp offers 17 comfortable cottages, with all meals included, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of this unique setting.

Jamuani

Jamuani Nature Camp is deep inside the forest of Similipal adjoining the Core forest. It also has 14 cottages.

Ramatirtha

Ramatirtha Nature Camp is located close to Similipal Tiger Reserve at Jashipur. Ramatirtha Nature Camp at Jashipur which is on the bank of river khairi has 10 number of luxury accommodations. Ramatirtha has a Crocodile Rearing Centre.

Barehipani

Barehipani Nature Camp is located near Barehipani Waterfall and is around 28 Km from the magnificient Joranda Waterfall. It has 8 furnished room stays. All the details can be found from the website.
